BIBULUS

BIBULUS

BORDEAUX, FRANCE

This traditional style re-created red Bordeaux is the embodiment of the love of wine.

A Cru Bourgeois blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Medoc, a region where many of the great wines are produced. Aged for twelve months in American oak barriques, the Bibulus has a brilliant intense color with a deep ruby tint. In the mouth, it has a soft and an appealing balance of new wood and ripe berry aromas, a kiss of licorice, vanilla and pain grille, silky tannins and a multi-layered finish that lasts.

Trophy winner at the Vinalies Internationales 2013 in Paris, France, on March 1, 2013, besting 1,736 other red wines in the dry red category.

Awarded 21 times in 10 countries on 2 vintages.

SUMILLER

SUMILLER

YECLA, SPAIN

From a single varietal, Sumiller is from Monastrell vines of the Yecla region of southeastern Spain, not far from the Mediterranean coast.

Vineyards here are slightly elevated and are mostly planted on stony topsoil. Monastrell, more commonly known as Mourverdre in France or Mataro in the New World, is meaty and chewy in the mouth. The well-integrated tannins are unmistakable and yet harnessed — hence, soft and supple; this wine is bigger, more serious. A touch herbaceous, Sumiller will make an accomplished suitor to Asian dishes with succulent sauces. Also pairs well with Szechuan, Cajun, Indian, traditional Spanish food, most Italian dishes and grilled meats.

Intense dark cherry in color, and projects fragrant aromas of mature red and blue fruits with hints of chocolate at the finish which adds to the elegant sweet tannins. In short, it is the thinking man's fun in a bottle — it is for the serious playboy who needs a lot of body to touch. A complex and voluptuous wine.

Best of Class Mourvedre at the 2013 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition in California, USA, on June 23, 2013.

Awarded 52 times in 11 countries on 5 vintages.

DISCIPULUS SYRAH

DISCIPULUS SYRAH

LANGUEDOC, FRANCE

From the South of France in the Languedoc region, this Syrah varietal is cooled by the evening breeze from the Mediterranean and equally ripened by the warm daylight on the stony soils on the windswept hills of the coast. The effect is a fragrant and lively aroma on the nose. The Syrah's spicy character naturally stands up to strong Asian dishes. While the grape's juice and skin are in contact in the vat, thermo-vinification is applied for structure. A bit of heat to soften the skin while melding with the juice brings about a fuller taste and enhanced color. The healthy by-product of this process is the rise of resveratrol in the wine — a polyphenol known for its antioxidant properties.

Low yield ensures an excellent concentration of ripe, smoky blackberries and a seductively inky robe. Fresh and fruity, floral and spicy, with a solid structure anchoring it all, the Discipulus Syrah is easy-going and adaptable. A very sociable red.

DISCIPULUS BLANC

DISCIPULUS BLANC

LANGUEDOC, FRANCE

An elegant vintage white wine handcrafted in the Languedoc region, South of France. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Muscat Petit Grain.

Often times white wine exudes a sense of acidity or thinness, but the numerous types of grape in the Discipulus Blanc all play a role that completes this wine. Lees Stirring (also known as batonnge) is applied to the Sauvignon Blanc which offers crisp acidity. The Colombard's freshness and the very aromatic and sweet Muscat Petit Grain increases the release of yeast compounds in the wine resulting in a well-rounded, creamy and velvety sensation in the mouth. Batonnge may cause premature oxidation, so to compensate, the grapes are picked in the early morning or late evening and not when the sun is at its brightest. Finally, the veritably unknown Ugni Blanc ties the sweetness and the acidity of the three well-defined varietals together.

The Discipulus Blanc is refreshing and fragrant suggesting white flowers and citrus — refreshing on the nose, and hints at butterscotch and toffee — warm and creamy in the mid-palate too.

AGAPITOS BRANCO

AGAPITOS BRANCO

ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL

Made from Portugal's exotic Antao Vaz, Roupeiro and Perrum varietals, the Agapitos Branco is a gem to be uncovered.

On initial approach, thoughts of tropical fruits prevail - pineapple, hints of mangoes and honey. It further evolves into citrus fruits —the kind of juice perfectly suited for a warm and balmy day. Its refreshing soft acidity integrates nicely with a satin-like palate. It is a tasteful and well-balanced white, perfect for those special moments at the table.

CELEBRUS

CELEBRUS

LIMOUX, FRANCE

The only one that sparkles in the series, Celebrus is from the Latin meaning "respected" or "celebrated".

About one century before the Champagne Region produced the famous Bubbly, Benedictine nuns from the Abbey of St. Hilaire in a neighboring village of Limoux accidentally created the first sparkling wine in the world, the Blanquette de Limoux. Its fino bubbles stay creamy on the tongue and you will find none of the sharpness sticking around the mouth; in the absence of an edge is a delicate fizz.

Its flavor is like that of an overripe pineapple, notes of apricots and peach with floral aromas. Truly an expression of lightness and elegance.

A Double Gold winner at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition 2012 in New York, USA, on March 31, 2012.

VIVO

VIVO

The newest member in the Manny O. Wines line, Vivo is a medium sweet red from Puglia, the region located in southern Italy. The most affordable wine in the series, this was created for bonding with friends and big fiestas. So versatile, it can be paired with any type of food.

Intense red color with violet reflections. Intriguing and strong aroma, reminiscent of red fruits with particular notes of strawberry and berries. Taste is pleasantly well-rounded with a sweetness making it full and flirty.

The Asian and New Global Palate

"Asian food and eating habits are poles apart in comparison with our Western neighbors. On one hand, Asians generally dine family style. That is to say, all dishes are at the table, all at the same time. Flavors in food are not linear and run the gamut of sweet, sour, spicy and salty in varying degrees. In terms of beverage, most Asians prefer them a touch sweet as opposed to sour.

For example, our tendency to add sugar in fresh orange juice is not altogether outrageous. Conversely, Westerners eat one dish paired with a type of wine or beverage at a time. By and large, their wines traditionally have more tartness and acidity to even out the cream, butter and/or cheese pervading in their food.

From my personal experiences and ongoing explorations, the fascination about formulating wines is in the reworking of what is of the Old World to the emerging new world palate. In this se, the Asian palate.

As a rule of thumb, red wine paired with Asian food should not be too tannic. That said, the long-standing directive of reds for meat and white wines foreafood does not apply with Asian food. It is not so much the kind of meat that dictates your grape, but the sauces it comes with.

Curry, black bean and oyster sauce are all big in flavor. For example, curried grouper or clams in black bean sauce will fare well with a Syrah (Shiraz) with soft and sweet tannins, as much as your basic beef stew would. A red wine with strong tannins, when paired with the Asian dark, tasty and sticky sauces, the result is bitter. When paired with much spice, it fires up the tongue.

By nature, our mind provoked by our senses is programmed to register unpleasant tastes more readily when a beverage follows food being masticated. Asians commonly chase down a pizza dinner with cola as opposed to a glass of red. Sweet over sour. The challenge then, was to formulate a wine that is sweet by virtue of its fruit in the initial approach, yet followed shortly by a medium-dry palate. When wines are singularly sweet, they mostly give the impression of inferiority. (As a point of clarification, this of course does not speak of the intrinsic nature of sweet grape varietals or dessert wines.)

Another dimension had to be explored to bridge the gap between sweet and sour. Working with the winemaker, the development of these wines was concentrated on achieving a very well integrated juice, layered and complex, yet bound and banded seamlessly. For instance, coffee, when sweetened with coffee crystals or coffee sugar, tastes rounded because the elements are all integrated, while when sweetened with regular sugar, you will taste the separation of the sugar from the water and coffee. And so it is with wine. The goal is to heighten the flavors of most Asian dishes, and not to wash down its taste.

The world is truly a global village with flying and travelling becoming a way of life. The marriage of food from different cultures has given birth to a New World Cuisine - food that runs a gamut of flavors, like most Asian dishes. This is what inspired me to blend Manny 0. Wines. Wines that bring together the flavors of the wine and the food harmoniously, generating the formulas to live, eat and drink by. Thus the tagline I Heart Wine."

Concours des Grand Vins de France

Maon, Burgundy, France

www.concours-des-vins.com

An annual wine competition held in Macon, an historic wine center in the southern reaches of Burgundy, it is one of France’s longest-established wine competitions. The event debuted in 1925 at the Comité des Foires (Committee of Fairs), a grouping of the region’s cultural and agricultural expositions. By 1948, the number of wines on show at the Comité des Foires led to the event’s name changing to La Foire-Exposition de Maon et la Foire Nationale des Vins de France. At that time the concept of wine reviews, awards and competitions was in its infancy, so the Maon-based event had something of a monopoly. It was also free to develop as a wine competition for the entire nation, rather than a country show focusing on local wines.

In February 2006 the competition separated from the other events and became a wine fair in its own right. Under its new title the event has a slightly more local feel; its mission statement remains ‘to promote the industry, commerce, artisanship and agriculture of Macn, of the region and of Burgundy, in particular of wine and other produce of the land’.

Guimaraes, Portugal

www.concoursmondial.com

Concours Mondial de &Ladles created in 1994, labeled the “wine world-championship” with 6000 participating products from the four continents, samples represent more than 500 million marketed bottles. The jury of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles brings together international wine experts from 40 nationalities every year. Founder of “Revue Beige des vins” and farmer president of the International Federation of Wine Journalists and Writers Louis Havaux is the founder of The Concours Mondial. The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles was first held on April 1994 in Bruges. Former president of the International Union of Oenologists and Committee of Denominazione di Origine of Italy, Edo Rivella states: “I can affirm, without a doubt, that the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles has, since its first edition, become one of the foremost authorities among the best international competitions which can be counted on the fingers of one hand.” The competition entries are judged by international wine experts and professional tasters like oenologists, sommeliers, journalists, wine writers and international buyers and traders: A total of 240 experts from 40 nations. Each wine gets a mark out of a hundred. A medal is given according to this schem. Depending on the mark, there are different award classes: ‘Medaille d’Argent’ (Silver Medal), ‘Medaille d’Or’ (Gold Medal), ‘Grande Medaille d’Or’ (Grand Gold Medal). The maximum of medals is 30% of the total of the samples presented.

Critics’ Challenge International Wine Competition

San Diego, California, USA

www.criticschallenge.com

An international wine competition held each May in San Diego, southern California. It was created with the express intent of balancing out the ‘Americanized’ palate which is a naturally occurring feature of many other US-based wine competitions. Open to all commercially produced wines; many hundreds of which are submitted from around the world and sorted into more than 250 categories.

The competition’s chief judges are Robert Whitely, journalist and wine writer, and Mary Ewing-Mulligan, America’s first female Master of Wine and president of New York’s International Wine Center. They are joined by a panel of experienced wine judges, mainly from the US but also of British origin. Among them are Ed McCarthy (Ewing-Mulligan’s husband), respected wine author Stephen Brook and Patrick Comiskey, senior editor of Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Decanter World Wine Awards

London, UK

www.decanter.com

Decanter World Wine Awards was founded in 2004 and has gained a reputation as one of the world’s most respected and influential wine competitions. Each year the competition receives entries from over 47 countries worldwide and in 2012 received 14, 120 entries, making it the largest wine competition in the world. The results of the competition are published online and in Decanter’s October Edition, which, is released in September.

An expert panel of tasters from around the world, chaired by Steven Spurrier, judge wines on a regional basis reflecting variety, style and retail price. The Awards are one of the most important competitions in the UK wine trade. Wines are tasted blind within their region of origin and price bracket to ensure that an expression of terroir is taken into account, and wines are compared like for like. Each wine is individually assessed and discussed by a dedicated panel before a verdict is recorded. The initial grades that a wine can receive from a panel are: no award, Commended, Bronze, Silver or Gold. All Silver and Gold-medal winning wines are re-tasted by the Regional Chair for confirmation. All Silver wines are tasted twice, and all Gold, Regional Trophy and International Trophy winning wines are tasted up to four times. Over 200 judges come from around the world, 54 of whom hold the title of Master of Wine and 11 Master Sommeliers. The judging is done on a regional basis to promote a sense of origin and only judges that have an intimate knowledge of a specific region are part of the panel. A thorough understanding of regional style is crucial in order to recognise quality.

International Wine Challenge

London, United Kingdom

www.internationalwinechallenge.com

This competition was launched in London in 1984 by Robert Joseph and Charles Metcalfe, originally as a feature in Wine International magazine, later renamed Wine & Spirit, now Harpers Wine & Spirit Trade Review. Joseph and Metcalfe jointly chaired the competition until 2000 when they were joined by Derek Smedley MW. In 2006, the IWC and Wine International were sold to William Reed Business Media.

The IWC takes place over two weeks. There are three rounds of blind tasting: groups of eight to twelve wines of the same style are tasted and scored by tables of 4 or 5 judges. There are over 400 judges who assess each entry for its faithfulness to variety, region and vintage, independent of its price. Wines scoring more than 84 points out of 100 advance to round two, where they are tasted again and medal winners in each style are awarded. Round three is a tasting of gold medal winners to decide on trophy winners.

Mundusvini Great International Wine Competition

Neustadt, Germany

www.mundusvini.de

The International Wine Award was first held in 2001. Even at its debut, it registered 2,235 entries from all the major wine-growing regions in the world. And record participation in 2011 shows just how important the competition has become in Germany. 6,000 wines were entered. Since 2002, the Wine Award has been under the patronage of the international wine organisations 01V (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, Paris) and Union Internationale des nologues (UIOE, Paris). In addition, MUNDUS VINI is a member of the Federation Mondiale des Grands Concours de Vins et de Spiritueux in Canada (VinoFed). 2003 saw its official recognition by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, so that now inclusion of the awards won in bottle labels is permitted.

The tasting assessment system corresponds to that of the international penologists’ association (UIOE) and the ON, which has been developed for international tastings. It is a mathematical scheme providing weighted points for the criteria of appearance, smell, taste and harmony/overall impression. Ideally, a wine can be given 100 points as the total of all the criteria. Each wine is tasted and assessed by a commission that comprises 5-7 jurors and must have 4/7 international and 3/7 German tasters. Under ON regulations, no more than one-third of products entered are to be given awards.

New York International Wine Competition

New York, NY, USA

www.nyiwinecompetition.com

The New York International Wine Competition is founded by Adam Levy aka the “Alcohol Professor. He is a spirits writer and judge. He has organized various spirit tasting events and competitions and is the President of All Spirits Events. All Spirits Events creates and organizes educational tastings for private and public events. Mr. Levy has a BA from Rutgers University and an EMBA from Baruch College, and currently sits on the Baruch College’s International Business Curriculum Advisory Board. He resides in the New York area with his dog Garrett Oliver.

This is the first major international wine competition with TRADE ONLY judges from top to bottom that consist of people who are buyers from the top retail stores, restaurant owners, sommeliers, distributors and importers. Unlike other competitions, these judges have purchasing power and the ability to make a direct impact on brand sales. The second major difference in this competition is that each submission will not only be placed in its product category but also its pricing category. Therefore a wine will be judged in its category along with other wines in its same price range. Each category will have its own pricing levels and are listed on the submission form. The third major difference in this competition is that each trade buyer/judge will know the actual retail price for the wine they are judging, because trade buyers, just like consumers also make buying decisions based upon price.

San Diego International Wine Competition

San Diego, California, USA

www.sdiwc.com

The San Diego International Wine Competition is one of the longest running and most revered of the many annual wine competitions staged in the United States. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2013, and owe it all to the vision and credibility of three wise wine men of San Diego in the early 1980s — Dan Berger, Bob Foster and Dick Colangelo. All three gentlemen are well known in wine circles, but few remember it was they who got what was then called the “San Diego National” off the ground in 1982. At the time there were but a handful of other wine competitions, and the San Diego National quickly became a benchmark event for winemakers eager to see how their wines stacked up against their rivals’ wines.

“Last Saturday night was my first time to drink a bottle of wine from Manny 0. It was Discipulus Blanc. I was in the middle of a speech giving compliments to this amazing and interesting wine, then I was interrupted by my German partner and told me the story of Manny 0. I was surprised and went here to really check the site. Discipulus went so well with my food, every bite was just like the first bite. Discipulus was fresh and orgasmic (in a very good way). Great Job Manny! Cheers!”
